Indexing question.

Hi,
My question revolves around indexing. I'm using an index to help me with a naming character limit in certain arc tools, and right now it works fine. My question is, is there a way to designate how many digits are used for each indexed position? For example, is there a way to return the first indexed position in a list as "00" instead of just "0"?
